The Colorado Rapids are one of the top-tier sports franchises operating in Denver, along with the Denver Nuggets, the Denver Broncos, the Colorado Avalanche, and the Colorado Rockies. The team plays its home matches at the Dick’s Sporting Goods Park Stadium, a $131 million complex that can host up 26,000 spectators.

The Colorado Rapids are one of the 10 charter clubs of the Major League Soccer, the professional league that unites the best soccer teams in the United States and Canada. The Rapids activate in the MLS since its first season in 1996. Over the years, the Rapids had a roller-coaster evolution in the national competition. The Rapids finished last in the playoffs of the inaugural season, and had inconsistent results over the years. Nevertheless, in the recent period, the Colorado Rapids have enjoyed a period of consistent success, finishing the 2010 MLS season with fanfare after winning the MLS Cup, the competition’s supreme prize.

The Colorado Rapids’ first home was the Mile High Stadium, where they played their home matches until 2001. The next home stadium for the Rapids was the Invesco Field, which replaced the dated Mile High Stadium. Finally, the Rapids now play their matches at the state of the art Dick’s Sporting Goods Park, a multi-million dollar complex that was specifically built for hosting soccer matches.

The colors and the badge of the club have also changed over the years, but the current color schemes is burgundy and sky blue, and the badge is shield-styled and bears the official colors of the club. The Colorado Rapids always had a high numbers of fans attending their home matches, with the average attendance being in the upper part of the MLS top. Two group of ultras cheer for the team at each game, the Pid Army, and the Bulldog Supporter Group. These organized supporters are equipped with banners and drums, and occupy a special section of the stadium, called the Front Range.

Among the star players that contributed to the Rapids’ recent success we can count the captain Pablo Mastroeni playing as a midfielder, the forward Conor Casey, and the newest addition, international Irish player and the former striker of the British Premier League team Hull City, Caleb Folan.

By winning the 2010 MLS Cup, the Colorado Rapids also secured their participation in the prestigious continental competition that pitches the best soccer teams of each country – the CONCACAF Champions League.
