A Short History of the Denver Broncos

admin May 9, 2011 0

The Denver Broncos football team was formed in 1960 as part of the American Football League or AFL.  The team colors are blue, orange, and white.  The Broncos name was chosen by a winning entry in a fan contest.  The bronco is a type of wild horse that lives in the western United States.

Since the team was founded, it has had 14 coaches.  First coach Frank Filchock was fired after the first horrific football season in 1961.  Several coaches followed in the following years, which were losing years for the team.

Despite the losses, the team was able to sell over 20,000 tickets in 1965.  This surpassed their expectations and proved that they had a loyal fan base.

In 1967 and 1968, the team played in an improved stadium in new uniforms.  The team also made history in 1968 by hiring the first black starting quarterback Marlin Briscoe.

At the end of their first decade of existence, the Broncos finished with a disappointing 5-8-1 records.  They were the only AFL team to not have a winning record.

The team saw its first winning season in 1973. In 1974, the demand for tickets increased due to the previous season’s successes and the team has its second winning season. In 1977, the team made its first trip to the Super Bowl. The Broncos lost Super Bowl XII 27-10.

In 1986, the team made its second trip to the Super Bowl.  Super Bowl XXI was played in Pasadena, California. The New York Giants beat the Broncos 39-20 and the Broncos dealt with their second Super Bowl loss.

In 1987, the team made it to Super Bowl XXII.  They played against the Washington Red Skins in San Diego, California.  Despite this being their second trip to the Super Bowl in as many years, the team loses again 42-10.

The Broncos were back to the Super Bowl again in 1989.  This time they played against the San Francisco 49’ers.  Quarterback Joe Montana scored a win for his team as the Broncos lost their fourth Super Bowl  game 55-10.

In 1997, the Broncos went to their fifth Super Bowl game.  Super Bowl XXXII was played in Miami against the Falcons.  This time, quarterback John Elway took his team to victory.  The Broncos won their first Super Bowl 34-19.  After the game, Elway retired from the Broncos.

During the 2010 season, the Denver Broncos finished 51st overall.  The season was noteworthy because of a videotaping scandal which led to the firing of head coach Josh McDaniels.  He was replaced by John Fox in 2011.
