Colorado: The Healthiest State in the United States

It has been said that Colorado is the healthiest state in the United States and that it is a great place to live.  With the dry, arid conditions, you find in Denver, this city is a healthy place to live for people who have breathing problems.  Doctors always tell patients with breathing problems that they should move to Arizona but maybe they need to think about moving to Denver, Colorado instead.  Yes, it is cold and snowy in the winter, but the snow does not stay around due to the way it is situated by the mountains that surround the city.

In addition, Colorado is the only state in the United States that has an adult obesity rate under 20% with a rating of 18.9%.  They achieved this coveted place by implementing the Colorado Physical Activity and Nutrition Plan (COPAN).  This was to promote healthier eating habits and increase the physical activity level of its residents.  It is also promoting the health benefits of breastfeeding.  They also want to decrease television-viewing time, less consumption of sugar-sweetened beverages, and high calorie/low nutrient foods.   They also want restaurants to promote healthy food choices like salads.

With all the available outdoor activities that Colorado offers, it would be very easy to be active and keep fit.  You can find many winter sports such as skiing, snowboarding, and cross-country skiing.  In the spring and summer, you will find many trails to hike in the mountains, horseback riding, and other physical activities.  Walking is the best physical activity for any person no matter what health problems you have.  Even if you were in a wheel chair or walk with a cane, the state of Colorado still advises going out and getting some type of exercise.

In addition to making sure that you keep yourself physically active, you also need to make sure that you follow a healthy diet.  This diet should include plenty of fresh fruits and vegetables, and plenty of water.  Make sure that you grill your foods, and eat healthy unprocessed food.  Try to get at least fifteen minutes of exercise a day, even if it is just a walk around the block.

While we are trying to eat healthy and get more exercise, we still have a long way to go to catch up with the health of the rest of the world.  We just have to keep working at the problem.
