The Denver Zoo was founded in 1896 when the orphaned bear Billy Bryan was donated by the mayor of Denver. Billy was the first official resident of the Denver Zoo.
In 1950, an agreement was made between the Denver Zoological Foundation and the city and county of Denver. This changed the zoo forever and it evolved into a fantastic wonderland of 80 acres in City Park in Denver.
Today more than 650 species are residing in the Denver Zoo; the animals live in naturalistic habitats. The zoo keeps on working to enhance the lives of some endangered species, some of them extinct in the wild. The zoo encourages the approach to develop the appreciation of wildlife by education and conservation of natural resources.
Zoo Lights, “where wild life meets wild lights”, runs from the 10th of December until the 2nd of January. This annual holiday celebration is a bright shining tradition at the Denver Zoo. With over 38 brilliantly illuminated light acres and Santa Claus waiting to meet your children, Zoo Lights is sure to be a stunning holiday light experience for all ages!
This year there are a number of events planned for Zoo Lights; Members’ Preview Night, Kwanzaa, Wild Ice and Zoo Years’ Eve. Lights is at all times a great choice for a romantic outing over the holiday season. So, how about a special night fully dedicated to romance?
