A treasure in the cultural life of Denver, Colorado, City Park Jazz is a series of concerts that feature Colorado artists and is held in a scenic outdoor setting. Every summer season, 10 free jazz concerts are showcased in the City Park. The free concert series also showcase other forms of music including salsa and blues, which largely appeal to its varied, urban fans.
The City Park Jazz Summer Concert Series takes inspiration from a tradition that started over the past century. City Park’s photographs show scenes of men wearing their Sunday suit and ladies in beautiful hats. They strolled on Ferril Lake, rested on the lawns and listened to concerts held at the City Park.
Commencing in 1986 as jazz concerts, the current series attracts thousands of people of all ages, socioeconomic backgrounds and ethnicities. In 2008, the event drew more than 65,000 fans, enjoying the special mix of music, community and nature.
The event is run by City Park Jazz, Inc. This 501 (c) (3) company is managed by volunteers who love music and the city of Denver, as well as take pride in drawing people together for music. Financing comes from grants and gifts from charitable institutions, private sources, and sponsorships and donations from the business sector.
City Park Jazz is also dedicated at protecting the environment; it collaborates with Waste Farmers to recycle waste from its concerts.
For the year 2011, the concert series will be held at the Bandstand by City Park Pavilion on Ferril Lake, City Park. Situated East of Downtown at Colorado Blvd and 17th Avenue, City Park also houses the Museum of Nature and Science and Denver’s Zoo.
Concert goers can also picnic at the area, with foods available onsite. They can bring folding chairs or blankets for comfort and park in the parking lots and garage at the Museum of Nature and Science and Denver Zoo. Those who want to avoid parking hassles can proceed to the venue with their bikes.
For the 25th Summer Concert Series, City Park Jazz is looking for further support from the community to keep the concerts free and alive. This community-supported charity offers several sponsorship opportunities, such as a Concert Sponsorship that includes the use of the City Park Boat House for a corporate event.
For the 2011 concert series, some of the various artists set to perform are the eight-piece group Otone Brass Band, sought-after performer Hazel Miller and leading Salsa band LA Candela.
